Walks near the house

We can walk out of Big Moon Cottage down a quiet country road, to stunning Toe Head and secluded Sandy Cove on the Atlantic Ocean. This area is packed with breathtaking scenery, hidden sandy coves which are perfect for swimming and colourful little villages.

Local villages

Castletownshend, a quaint village built on a steep hill which leads down to an idyllic little harbour. Glandore, a riviera-style village nearby and its neighbouring fishing port of Union Hall.

Whale and dolphin watching

From nearby Reen Pier we can go on a whale and dolphin watching cruise led by an experienced skipper.

Nearby towns

The lively market towns of Skibbereen and Clonakilty are both a short drive from Big Moon Cottage. Here we can stroll around, soaking up the atmosphere and history or we can have a drink in a local pub and listen to some music.

Lough Hyne

Lough Hyne beach

Lough Hyne is a beautifully situated sea-water lake. Unusual plant and animal life live in the clear water and the lake is important for marine research. The nearby wooded hill offers spectacular views seaward. Night kyaking under the stars on Lough Hyne with an expert guide from Russagh Mills is an unforgettable experience!

Baltimore, (25 mins drive from Big Moon) is a vibrant village of many parts — it is a fishing port, a yachting centre and a ferry port for Cape Clear and Sherkin Islands, as well as having fine pubs and restaurants. Both Cape Clear and Sherkin Islands are a paradise for walkers with their special island atmospheres, fine beaches and historical sites.

Glengarriff and Garnish Island

Glengarriff (about 90 mins drive from Big Moon) is a magical place of lakes, ancient woods, and subtropical gardens. Garnish Island (see photo top of this page), which is situated in Glengarriff bay is a famous subtropical garden-island of rare flowers, trees, and shrubs. The Island also has the Italian Gardens, the De Medici house, and the Martello Tower. The boat trip to the island includes a tour of the local seal colony.
